Diet Coke Gets a Facelift

photo from InStyle
Have you heard the news? Diet coke has named Marc Jacobs their creative director! We all have a soft spot for Marc Jacobs as it is but wait until you see the new Diet Coke Packaging.

The new packaging marks the drink's 30th anniversary and is inspired by graphics from the 80's, 90s and '00s. I love the new packaging! I think its super cute and playful. Unfortunately we in North America won't be seeing them on the shelves just yet. They are currently only available in select European countries (sad face). But, I have hope that one day we will be able to snag these.

Check out an interview with Marc Jacobs by New York Magazine here!

PS. These are the kind of posters I would put on my wall.
PPS. Do you prefer the MJ/Diet Coke or the Beyonce/Pepsi team?

TV Review: The Carrie Diaries

So even though I promised myself I wouldn't get into another TV show until after this school year but... I failed. After Alison from amarixe on YouTube was talking about the Carrie Diaries I thought I would give it a try and I fell in love with it after the first episode! I'm about 5 episodes in and can't get enough (which could be dangerous considering March Madness at school is coming up).

For those of you who may not be aware, The Carrie Diaries is a prequel to the much beloved Sex and the City. It is super funny, whimsical and entertaining. It's a cross between a teen drama but an adult cult favourite.

It takes place in 1984 back and forth from Connecticut and Manhattan and revolves around Carrie Bradshaw (obviously) at the age of 16. She gets an internship in Manhattan and begins to discover the big city. She balances two lives and discovers herself in a new way. It represents a typical teen relationship to parents, sibling and friends but with a twist.

I don't want to give too much away in case anyone wants to start watching it but if you have some free time, I would definitely check it out. What surprised me the most were the clothes! I couldn't believe how much from the 80s has come back in style.

So if you have time or if you have a list of shows you want to start I would put this on it! If you already watch it, let me know what you love (or maybe don't love it) -I would love to hear your thoughts!!

PS: check out Alison's blog and YouTube channel! She's one of my favourites :)

Valentine's Day Looks

Valentine's Day is literally right around the corner. Excited? You should be. Whether you have a dinner date with your beau or a girls night out, see the looks to get you through the day and phase into night!

Dinner Date

If you have a romantic dinner date planned, you should dress in something cute but comfortable. The worst is being at dinner in an uncomfortable dress. Here is my outfit of choice: a red dress from Modcloth, Forever 21 Nude Pumps, an Aldo clutch and a French Connection Bracelet.

Casual Movie

Movie date is my kind of Valentine's day. Actually that's a lie. Mine would be a sweatpants date. However, a movie date can be super casual which means you can dress down but still look girly. Try pairing some colored jeans like these ones from Mango, a white blouse with detailing like this one from Vero Moda, and a pair of booties, I chose these from Asos. Then throw on a leather jacket, for this combo I chose a brown one from Delias and top it off with OPI Skyfall nails.  The gold hoops from Brooks Brothers and the color blocked clutch from Asos give it a dainty look.

Girls Night Out

If you are celebrating Valentine's with your best girl friends, its a chance to dress flirty and fun. I am especially loving pleated or flared skirts right now (especially leather ones, yum), so I chose to start off with this one from Asos. I paired it with a crop top from Miss Selfridge, and nude wedges from Aldo. I completed it with gold accessories like this watch from Marc by Marc Jacobs and statement necklace from Modeets. This will be comfy and cute, perfect for drinks or dancing!

There you go! Some fun and easy Valentine's day looks. Let me know which look is your fave and how you will be celebrating Valentine's day :)

ps: I made all these sets on Polyvore!

How to do Spring Break for Less

It's February! Which means spring break is quickly approaching in only a few weeks. If you aren't travelling anywhere and kickin it at home, here are some ways to do Spring Break for less, but still have fun!

Movie Marathon
Who doesn't like a movie marathon? Grab your friends, make some popcorn, and watch your favourite series. You get to hang out with your friends and stay up all night. Some cult favourites of mine include: Harry Potter, Back to the Future, and Star Wars!

Be a Tourist in your City
Have you ever tried this? Take a day and go be a tourist in your city. If you live in bigger cities, there is so much you can find that you most likely have never tried because you thought, "oh I live here what's the point?" Go downtown  have lunch at a small restaurant, shop at the markets and take pictures with landmarks. You'll discover your city all over again!

Girls Night
A key for spring break. Have a girls night and make fun drinks, watch romcoms, play some ridiculous games, and catch up with your best friends. This never fails to be a good night.

Try Something New
Whether this trying a new recipe or trying new class at the gym, trying new things is a great pass time and who knows maybe you'll realize you are good at something new!

Go rediscover a childhood activity
Hit up the bowling alley, mini putt or laser tag. You will be surprised how much fun you have after all these years!

Read... for fun
Sometimes we can get so caught up in school readings we don't take two for ourselves. Remember that book you started in the summer? Finish it.

Have a Home Spa Day
There are so many home spa treatments from DIY scrubs and facials to bubble baths and aromatherapy. Find some of the ones you've pinned on Pinterest and put them to the test. Have some alone time or grab a girlfriend who can indulge with you!

And there you have it -pretty much everything I will be doing this spring break!

Ellen, Mean Girls, and a super cool Flip Book.

I'm back with some new fun posts for you guys!

Okay so I had to stop looking at this first one because I was dying of laughter in class (don't tell my prof). If anyone is a fan of Ellen DeGeneres (but like, who isn't?) you will love this. It sums up her 35 most memorable moments in... are you ready? GIFs. (SCORE). My personal favourites are 12, 19 and 24!

Check it out here at BuzzFeed!

Also, hilarious and thought provoking - where the boys from Mean Girls are today. It's just a funny reminiscent post which will make you want to watch Mean Girls, like now.

Again BuzzFeed has the scoop! Check it out.

Also this because a) the song is stuck in my head and b) just look how much time and effort the person put into this! A Gangam Style FLIP BOOK of the music video! This user is nothing less than talented!

Now that I have either gotten the song stuck in your head or made you mad for listening to it, I shall take my leave!

19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

As most of you know the 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place last night and there were no doubt some stunners on the red carpet (obviously). Here are some of my favourites!

Amanda Seyfried

Photo: PR photos
Okay how great does she look. Amanda wore this gorgeous blue gown from Zac Posen (also btw, so stoked he is judging the new PR season). This gown is form fitting and flattering but gives an extra bit of flare at the bottom. Her simplistic accessory choice gave more to the dress than it took and her smokey eye brought out the drama. I mean, she always looks fab but seriously, does anyone still picture her as Karen?

Jessica Chastain

Photo: Access Hollywood
How gorgeous is this red gown from Alexander McQueen. Jessica Chastain's career is booming right now, so its no surprise she stood out at last nights award. Like many of the other stars on the carpet last night, she kept it simple with a gorgeous necklace and soft waves. P.S pictures flying everywhere comparing her to Jessica Rabbit?! What do you think?

January Jones

Photo: Huffington Post

The "Mad Men" star stirred up loves and hates with this outfit. She wore a Prabal Gurung tuxedo inspired gown. She sported a pompadour hairstyle and very edgy make-up look. There were a lot of people who didn't like this outfit because of the white bib top (I would've liked it better without the halter strap) I personally think it was a unique outfit and I applaud her for taking the chance.

Naomi Watts

Photo: Huffington Post
This was my second favourite look next to Amanda Seyfried. Naomi Watts looks stunning in this Marchesa dress. The beaded gown made her look so fresh and luxurious on the red carpet. No doubt the red lip accented her extremely clean look. She took it one step further with the vintage inspired box clutch. Lovelovelove.

Kiernan Shipka and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons

Photo: Huffington Post
We can't forget the younger superstars who have no shame in showing off their style at last nights award. "Mad Men" actress Kiernan Shipka wore the cutest Oscar de la Renta dress with subtle diamond accessories. This 13-year-old has a cute style but isn't afraid to strut in heels.

Photo: Huffington Post
And who could forget young Aubrey Anderson-Emmson. The young "Modern Family" start walked with an adorable purple frilly dress. So much style for a  5-year-old.

And that's that! My favourite looks from the red carpet last night! What do you think? Were there any celeb look you liked best or maybe didn't like at all? Let me know!

Back in Action with Exam Blues

Hi gang!

So first let me address why I have been gone so long, I had a temp problem with my Gmail but finally got it working again last month but then alas, exams and papers were controlling my life! Since I am not done finals yet, and no doubt there are others out there too who are still sulking in school, I've decided to list a few tips for getting through exams, especially the final stretch!

First and foremost, don't give up. As much as it's awful watching your friends pack their bags to head off home for the holidays you have to keep your head clear and motivated. The more you do now, the less cramming, and the better the holiday break will feel! If you need some motivational help here is a video to help you get through the tough times!

Second, give yourself a break. It's already December 13th so I can imagine how antsy you are getting (trust me ... I know). Take an hour and watch a show or clean your room, something mindless to clear your head. I personally re-watch Criminal Minds episodes, mostly because I have seen them so many times so it is quite mindless(but still love them).

Third, all nighters will not do you any good. If you need to, take naps. You will feel so much better after! Even if you don't pull all nighters, make sure you get enough sleep especially the day before your exam. I find that I can't stay up passed 2 am or else I don't retain anything!
mmm yummy fruit.

Lastly, don't forget about your health! Exams are a time where we want to engross ourselves with junk food and forgetting that the gym exists. When you get tired or feel gross stand up, go for a quick walk,  or take a few and work it out at the gym! Also keep in mind about healthy eating habits; make sure you are drinking enough water and not just caffeine, and that you are getting your appropriate food supplements.

Sleeping, Facts, and Your Twenties

It has been a while since I've done a 'Posts of the Week' because I have been super busy with life but I have got some great ones for you guys! Hope you enjoy them LOL :) (if you aren't familiar with why I just used that abbreviation you should probably listen to this so you know I am not crazy, which I promise I am not http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPxary34-pE)

Anyway, the first post comes from Self Magazine. I subscribed to them over the summer and their emails everyday are filled with tips and tricks on everything from workouts, healthy eating, beauty, and in this case, sleeping! I received this email a few days ago entitled "8 Easy Ways to Sleep Better." Some of these are quite useful. Personally, I need to keep numbers one and seven in mind everyday. *Hint: another option for number three is to go for a quick walk or jog between those hours. This will also help you revitalize your body and feel refreshed for your afternoon.

http://mentalfloss.com/amazingfactgenerator/
The second link I want to share with you will probably waste a lot of your time but its probably worth it. Mental Floss has given us "The Amazing Fact Generator." I can't really say much about this link other than it will be time consuming, distracting, and addictive. So worth clicking through a few of these!

Last but not least, Thought Catalog's "15 Ways 20-Somethings Ruin Their Twenties." If you are in your twenties definitely give this a read. They put the facts very bluntly so if you do fall into one of these categories it will most likely be a slap in the face. However, no matter the brutality, they are quite insightful tips to help you live your twenties to their fullest potential Sidenote: lol to number nine

Voila mes amis. Enjoy!

Back at School!

Okay so, I am finally settled back in at school and am ready to get back to blogging. It has been a tad hectic getting unpacked and getting back into the grind with readings (ugh).  I have a so many new post ideas coming your way!  I hope you are just as excited for that as I am!

I am happy to be back at school mostly because it is keeping me occupied but it means no more time for Netflix …

I am still adjusting to everything here, mostly because I have to be away from home all over again. If you are in the same situation then you know what I mean. Personally, I am happy to know that  I have great friends here just as I have at home. They make coming back to school so much easier and less emotional. However, I feel that this year is going to be really different for me as a person. Like I said when I started this blog, I have grown so much as an individual and am really starting to find myself. My goal this year is to strive toward goals that are attainable and important to me rather than comparing myself to my peers and letting their judgment get in the way. I think this is especially important to anyone going through a transition right now. Don’t be afraid to try something new whether this be a new hobby or new fashion trend, make it your own. If you feel you look good then go with it. People notice when you are comfortable in your own skin and personally, I think its really important to feel that confidence especially at school. You will notice a difference in your success :)

No matter how much confidence you have nor what age you are, school will always seem like a drag but, knowing that I have an amazing opportunity to learn so many new things really motivates me to take in every last bit of student life.

I won't lie, I have already procrastinated on some readings (like now) but I am so excited for my classes this year and I can’t wait to dive in!

I will probably regret saying that…Oops.

Study hard!

Top 10: Back to School Essentials

Even though this post is a bit late, it's that time again! School is HERE. Back to school shopping is my guilty pleasure. It's so much fun! Actually though. I get much more excited for school after I have new stuff. So, I decided to make a Top 10 Back to School Essentials list! Yay!.

My Christian Siriano for Payless bag!
1. Backpack/Tote: I am currently in the market for a new backpack. Mine unfortunately did not make it after last year. I actually will be using a tote bag and a backpack at school. The tote for everyday class to class use that I can throw a note book, my pencil case, wallet, sunglasses, headphones, and my "go bag" in and run to class. However, I will also use a backpack for days that I may have more than one class to go to, go to the library, or to the gym.

2. Agenda: My life. I write everything in my agenda and I think I would be so lost without it. I just bought a new one, I actually invested in a Moleskin agenda this year from chapters. It is beautiful- it's a weekly agenda combined with a notebook and everyone should have one.

3. Laptop: Self explanatory especially if you are in University/College. However, I will say one thing. When in the market for a laptop, be sure to pick one that will work for you. I stress this because what may be good for your friends may not be good for you. Don't buy a laptop because everyone else has it, buy it because it will work for you.

4. Pencil case: Even though a pencil case may resonate with a grade school notion, they are ideal to be organized. I have a pencil case that is small and cloth which I can throw a few pens, pencils and maybe a highlighter or two in and be on my way. Chapters/Indigo/Coles has really fun ones if you are looking for something different.

= my life.  http://www.monstercable.com
5. Headphones/ earplugs: We all know those people who are extremely obnoxious in the library. I carry a pair of headphones and earplugs around just in case I run into a noisy person.

6. Notebooks/binders: Some people prefer loose sheets and binders while others prefer notebooks. I think it is really important to keep hand written notes as well as typed notes. Your brain will actually retain more knowledge if you go over what you learn right when you get home. Here is what I do. I write my notes in my notebook during lecture and when I get home I type up my notes so I can go over everything and refresh my memory :)

7. A "go bag": I think that I have mentioned a "go bag" a few times in this post. So my "go bag" is a little beauty bag I keep all my essentials in and throw in my bag everyday so I have everything I need. I am actually working on a "How to Create Your Go Bag" post so stay tuned for that!

My Tiger USB!
8. USB/Hardrive: USBs and hardrives are really important especially for students. Having a hardrive is a priority because the worst thing is to have your laptop crash the night before an exam ( I speak of personal experience). With a hardrive, you can regularly backup your notes and be safe! The second thing is a USB stick. I own two; one is a small 1GB memory stick I keep in my pencil case and the other is slightly bigger as an 8GB I keep at home for file transfers and last minute backups. P.s you can find really adorable USB sticks. For example, my 1GB looks like a tiger... yes, a tiger.

9. Books/Magazines/DVDs: Always, ALWAYS, have a book, movie or magazine you can pick up and read/watch as a break from school. It is extremely important to balance your life with your academics. Taking an hour break from your studies is healthy so do it.

10. Storage drawers: Organization for students makes academic life a lot easier. Having an organized work space and a clear space to work will allow you to be more productive. I have a bunch of small 3-tier drawer organizers I put my paper and pencils to clear up room on my desk.

Hopefully you all have your back to school essentials ready to go! If not, steal from my list. Go on, I dare you.

Olympic Beauty, Drinks and Pinterest

I figured that I should include at least one Olympic related post in this week's posts of the week since it's almost ending and we have to wait 2 years before another one. I came across this Styleite Opening Ceremony close up to the outfits of each country. I. unfortunately, didn't get a chance to see the ceremonies since I don't have cable TV at home so this was really cool to see. It shows the outfits of the counties at the ceremonies. The vast differences between their outfits is amazing! If you missed it I would take a look.

Okay, next was more a tribute to the end of the summer. It's an article from Shape Magazine that lists recipes for "Summer Cocktails Under 200 Calories." So if you still want to have some drinks with friends but feel a little better about it, I guarantee this recipes will satisfy those cravings. They have Watermelon, Pina Coladas, Mojitos, and much, much more! They are all fairly easy to make and can be made in bulk if you are preparing for girls night!

Last but not least something to keep you occupied while on Pinterest. It's Racked's "50 Beauty Brands to Follow on Pinterest Right Now." They say that this list of 50 brands will keep you up to date with the new and up and coming trends within the beauty industry. I had so much fun looking at these brands! They have also made a list of the Top 40 Magazines and 50 Fashion Sites to Follow as well. If you are bored one day and need something to do plus you may learn one or two things on the way! Also while you are at it, follow me on Pinterest here: http://pinterest.com/almeerajaffer/

Superhero Sublime

I can finally do my superhero post! I've wanted to talk about this for a while but I hadn't got around to seeing 'The Amazing Spiderman'. I was finally able to see it so I now want to do a sort of superhero review post. The three superhero movies that came out this summer; The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spiderman, definitely made the summer worth waiting for if you are a bit of a geek like me.

Okay first, Marvel's 'The Avengers." I was counting down the days for this film to come out, it was my most anticipated film of the summer. On IMDB, the summary is as followed:

"Nick Fury is director of S.H.I.E.L.D, an international peace keeping agency. The agency is a who's who of Marvel Super Heroes, with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When global security is threatened by Loki and his cohorts, Nick Fury and his team will need all their powers to save the world from disaster"
The first time I saw this it was amazing. The second, was even more amazing. In preparation for this I watched all the prequel movies: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America, and Thor, the only one I missed was The Hulk because Mark Ruffalo didn't play the Hulk and I knew the story line pretty well. Anyways, re-watching the movies before I saw The Avengers was a wonderful idea because I really got into the story lines and was able to see how they were all brought together. So, when the time for The Avengers came, it was a-a-amazing. They combined the story lines so well to make an incredibly impressive movie. It ran for 2 hours and 23 minutes, and it felt so short! It had a perfect combination of story lines, action, and comedy. If you haven't seen it yet GO. I saw it twice and I would watch it again in a heartbeat. Wait after the credits for this one!
PS: They have announced The Avengers 2! All actors have signed on for 6 movies which will be split between their own and The Avengers.
The second is the third in the trilogy, "The Dark Knight Rises." In my opinion, best one of the trilogy! The IMDB summary is as followed:
"In the final part of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, Batman must face a foe unlike any he has ever faced. In The Dark Knight, Batman saved Gotham, but could not save himself. Taking the blame for Harvey Dent's crimes, he was hunted by the Police, and thus had to leave the task of protecting Gotham in Gordon's hands. After what seemed like ages, Gordon finally brought peace to Gotham, and it was enough to convince the Dark Knight that Gotham was safe and that Bruce Wayne need never put on the Batsuit again. However, eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, a new foe emerges, and threatens to destroy Gotham. When this masked foe Bane proves too much for Gordon to handle, Batman must break his 8-year exile and return to defeat Bane from fulfilling his devious plan and claim his rightful place as the true Savior of Gotham."
8 years later in the series Batman remains awesome. Beyond awesome. The movie ran for 2 hours and 45 minutes but it flew by! I definitely didn't feel impatient or uneasy to the end. I loved every minute of it. They tied in loose ends so well and, in my opinion, made a perfect ending to the trilogy. This time, they added another superhero figure to compliment Batman, Cat Woman. I was unsure how I felt about Ann Hathaway playing Cat Woman at the beginning. In all her other work I've seen she isn't this aggressive. However, she did a great job in terms of the character she was given to play. I was impressed. The movie as a whole was packed with action never leaving you in a state of boredom. Go see this NOW.
Finally, "The Amazing Spiderman" which was the last of these I saw just at the beginning of this week. Here's the summary:
"Peter Parker (Garfield) is an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero"
I had heard mixed opinions about this remake. Some were saying it was really well done and others were saying it was awful. Personally, I didn't like the first Spiderman tirlogy mostly because Toby McGuire and Kristen Dunst really bothered me, I couldn't stand their characters nor their acting. But, I also wasn't sure if I wanted to see this remake because the trilogy was still done in recent years and the story line for that one was well done. So, when I finally saw this on Monday I found my self more impressed than I thought I would be. It was a pretty decent movie - for someone who doesn't follow the Spiderman story. I thought their take on things was good. My brother on the other hand hated it. He has read the comics and said everything about the movie was wrong. So if you do read the comics, you may not enjoy this but if you don't I think it is a decent pass time movie. Stay after the credits for this one too!
*All photos and summaries are from IMDB

Fashion Inspiration: PLL- Aria's Printed Peplum

Pretty Little Liars (PLL) has become one of my favourite shows. I became instantly addicted during the school year after a friend of mind recommended it to me. If you watch this show then you know how gorgeous the girls' clothes are, especially for high school students. The look put together every single episode. This will most likely be the first of many fashion inspiration posts from PLL, I'm hoping to do a few posts on each character.

In this week's episode, Aria (Lucy Hale) sported a gorgeous Betsey Johnson printed peplum dress. It looked stunning. Below I've paired some peplum ideas inspired by Aria's look this week. Aria's style is always edgy even when she is wearing a classy dress. All three of the outfits I have put together are based on her style as well as this week's outfit.

If you love dresses, there are some affordable printed peplum dresses available online such as this one from Asos and Krisp. Although not as complex as Aria's, both these dresses offer a simple black and white pattern that takes peplum to a new level. Aria complements her dress with a gorgeous gold belt, a simple gold necklace, and a gold cuff bracelet. The great thing about a black and white dress is that you can pair either gold or silver accessories with it. I've made an outfit based on both gold and silver tones.

This first pairing is silver toned and features an Asos Baroque printed dress. The bold print and the peplum bring a unique twist to the dress like Aria's did in this week's episode. The silver bow belt will accent the waist and the peplum detail giving the dress a beautiful shape. I have also included a simple twist bracelet from Forever 21 and a pair of black pumps from Aldo to dress it up a bit and give a simple and classy look.

The second pairing is the gold toned pairing with this dress from Krisp. It's a gorgeous, bold print that will look great with silver or gold. For some reason because the print is so bold, I automatically envision a sharper look. In this case, I've matched a black and gold toned flat from Aldo, a skinny gold belt with chain from Asos, and an edgy Forever 21 bracelet. Using this bracelet changes the whole look from classy to edgy because of it's dimensions.

If you aren't a dress  person, there are definitely ways to do this edgy peplum look in a shirt! Below I have a black and lace peplum top from TopShop and burgundy pants from Smart Set to create the same classy vs. edgy feel. I then added triangle necklace from RomWe, Marc by Marc Jacobs bracelet, and a gold chain bracelet from Asos to complete the look. This look is very diverse so you can wear whatever black shoe you like, I would probably pair this with a wedge heel or a high heel if I was wearing this out or to a dinner.

Peplum is truly a gorgeous detail on any garment. Embrace it before it's gone!

Opinion: Self-Esteem

I went to dinner today with some old friends from high school and while I was waiting to be shown to a table a few girls walked in, they couldn't be more than 13 or 14 years old, wearing mini skirts and high heels at a casual restaurant. I thought to myself, how insecure of themselves they must feel to dress like that at such a young age. Obviously, times have changed from 6-7 years ago when I was at that stage of life; media influence is much higher, standards are set, and the word perfect is everywhere. I mean everywhere. When I got home after dinner, I came across a website where the headline said "7 ways to get perfect picture face"  and the tips were just so ridiculous I couldn't believe it. They were talking about how to get the perfect nose and the perfect eye shape. Perfect, perfect, perfect. It really bothered me because who decides what perfect is anyway.

We are all unique and maintain our individuality through who we are and that includes every eye and every nose. People who want to change their entire face every morning to look like they are perfect don't make sense to me. Every quality  you have makes you who you are and that should never be changed or switched for a 200 dollar make-up routine.

I don't want this to sound like another cheesy, "love yourself" speech, but I think it's important to make sure we always stay true to ourselves and remember who we really are. We need to remember what make-up can't change, what photoshop can't fix, and what clothing can't hide.

Chin up gorgeous, your stunning.

The Name Game

I thought I would dive in and talk more in-depth about the name of my blog. I wanted to think of something clever but equally witty that would describe and what this blog is all about. I thought about what I wanted readers to think at first glance and what I wanted them to know about me. I came up with A Byte Of Simplicity.

It made sense to me in the end, I didn't want the blog to be scattered and confusing, I wanted it to be clear cut and understandable, a place where "my girl" could come and find everything she was looking for. Hence, Simplicity.

The Byte came in after. I originally wanted it to be "The Bite of Simplicity." But it wasn't personal enough for me. I really want my readers to know me for who I am. As a media student, I put a play on Bite into Byte. A Byte, for those who don't know, is a unit of digital measure in computing. A byte is the number of bits used to encode a single character of information into a computer. One byte is equalled to 8 bits. Therefore, this blog represents the 8 bits of me. Each category you see represents a part of me/something I'm interested in: Fashion, Beauty, Entertainment, Top 10s, Student Life, Around the World, Life (as in mine), Posts of the Week. This is where the name of the blog comes in. The "8 bits of my life" as I like to call them. 8 bits = 1 byte. A Byte of Simplicity.

I wanted to find a picture that represented simplicity for me and chose this.
This is simplicity.

Make- Up Essentials

Every girls needs to start their make-up collection somewhere, and sometimes it can be overwhelming especially in deciding what products to start with, whether to buy drugstore or high end, determining your skin type etc. That's why I've decided to talk about what I think are make-up essential every girl must have in her collection. I think I said in a previous post that I've really only been into make-up for about a year now, so I am not professional, believe me. The items that are listed below are what I believe to be products that would be good places to start and invest.

I'll never go back. Love this product
http://www.garnier.ca
1. A good moisturizer. Honestly, without a good moistrurizer your entire face routine can get the domino effect and products will not take to their full potential. For the longest time I was using the Neutrogena Moisture Oil-Free for combination skin and thought it was the best thing ever. Then, a make-up artist asked me what moistruizer I was using, I told her, she told me to stop. Apparently it was drying out skin really badly and I hadn't even noticed. I now use the Garnier Skin Naturals Shine Control Moisturizer and I will never go back. It's amazing, I noticed an immediate difference in my skin.

2. Foundation- This is probably the most difficult one to choose especially when first starting your collection. The good thing is that there will always be a shade to match yours skin tone. If you are looking for something basic, I would try a drugstore brand first. L'Oreal, Revlon, Neutrogena, and Rimmel all have great foundations to start with. You do want to be conscious of your skin type when choosing a foundation, for example if you have oily skin choose a foundation that is oil-free and is long lasting or all day wear. If you have dry skin choose a foundation that says hydrate, and finally if you have acne prone skin, for your skins sake, choose one oil-free and made for sensitive skin. If you do want to move on to high end foundations check out Make Up Forever (Mat +), Chanel, and Dior foundations.
Physicians Formula Matchmaker Blush
gives the face a nice, defined glow.

3. Blush- or bronzer, just gives you that extra little bit of glow when needed. The vast pigmentations allow you to get a more natural look or give you a pink sweep. I prefer blushes with peachy undertones, they look  more natural on my skin tone.  I use blushes especially when I look tired ( at school...) and I need that bit of color to make the rest of my face look alive again. There are plenty of blushes out there, you are bound to find some you love!

4. Eyeliner- I do not know what I would do without my eyeliner! I think you can ask anyone I know and they would tell you how much I love my eyeliner. The great thing about eyeliner is that you can make it bold and dramatic or simple and natural. Also, it comes in loads of shades which, if used properly, can make your eyes pop. I prefer liquid liner for lining my lid but pencil for lining my waterline. This is where it comes down to personal preference, I know some people who hate pencil and some who hate liquid. TIP: If you are lining your lid and waterline, use two different colors on the bottom and top if you are not going for a smokey eye. By doing so, your eyes will look bigger. I tend to use brown liner on my lid and black on my waterline.

This is the newest Maybelline mascara.
I love it for a more natural lash.

5. Mascara- If you have lighter eyelashes guaranteed mascara is your best friend. Everyone wants dark, full lashes and the right mascara can accomplish this for you. It's also great for covering eyeshadow fall out. Mascara is a trial and error product, each mascara does something different for everyone's lashes. There are, however, great great drugstore mascaras, you don't have to spend a ton of money to get a good one. I love the Maybelline mascaras they have some natural ones and some dramatic ones. No matter what other mascara I try, these always come back into my makeup bag.

6. Eyeshadow- of course. I think the ultimate eye shadow must haves are neutral colors. Having a neutral color or color pallet is so versatile; you can dress them up or wear them casually as everyday looks. The good thing with pallets is that all the neutral colors compliment each other so when you are in a rush you don't really have to think about too much while doing your eye makeup.

EOS lipbalm is great because its all
natural. I have this one in summer fruit.

7. Lip balm- I think this is pretty standard in any make-up collection. Using lip balm keeps your lips healthy and hydrated. I have a few so I can keep them in different spots so I will always have access to them.

8. Lipgloss- can be your best friend for everyday or going out at night. The range of shades allows you to make your lips pop or give a neutral glow. I think most girls prefer gloss over lipstick when beginning their collection because its less intimidating and you don't have to think about how to wear it.

9, Brushes- There is a distinct difference between how your make-up applies with brushes vs. sponges. Once I switched to using brushes I never went back. Brushes apply make-up more evenly and smoothly and even use less product than sponges.

10. Tools- Eyelash curler, tweezers, Q-tips etc.

Optional but worth it:
- Brow pencil
- Primers (Face/Eye Shadow)
- Lipstick
-Concealer (if you need it)
-Finishing Powder

Tada. Now go shopping :)

How to make the most of August

Summer is slowly coming to an end which means we have just over a month until it's back to school. This section of my list will be dedicated to my student side meaning I will be sharing tips and tricks how to get through school, exams, work etc.

Today its how to make the best of the last month of summer before we are all hitting the books again. My suggestion is make a bucket list. Everything you said you wanted to do this summer and never got around to it write it down. Here are just a few ideas that I think would make the perfect end to summer and my bucket list for you!

1- Plan a roadtrip! Even if its just for one night or for the day, a roadie with friends could be just what you need to end the summer.
2- Shop - Write down a list of everything you wanted to buy over the summer and never got around to. Toward the middle of August buy a few things off the list. I promise it will make you feel better about the summer ending
3- Buy new school supplies or fun things for your room- even if its just pens, it is always fun to use new school stuff for the first time.
4-Girls night- sometimes all you need is a little help from your friends. Watch some chick flicks, admire Channing Tatum, and make Margaritas
5- Spend some time with the fam! Once school rolls around you won't have time to see them, or if you go away for school like myself you won't be able to see them for a while
6- Beach- Pick up your fave beach book and sit on the sand and relax before life gets crazy
7- Get your nails did- mani/pedis. enough said.

Here's my bucket list!
1- Karaoke Bar- me and my friend have been wanting to do this forever! We are planning to go this Thursday.
2- Start my blog (check)
3- Buy new storage for my makeup and brushes- found some great contenders at Dollerama
4- Road Trip- my roadtrip actually turned into a trip to DISNEY with my two best friends. We leave in a few weeks! So very excited
5- Bonfire and BBQ
6- Beach trip
7- Take as many drop in classes as possible (I'm a Hip Hop dancer)
8- Sell some jewellery - I make jewellery and used to sell it quite often before I went away for school. I'm hoping to get back into it!
9- Harry Potter Movie Marathon- only because I haven't seen them in a while.

That's all folks. Here's to August!

Olympics:Canada's first medal!

Today was an wonderful day for Canada at the London 2012 Olympics because we got out first medal thanks to Jennifer Able and Emilie Heymans. They came 3rd in 3m synchro diving and were awarded the bronze medal after China and the US today. Social media feeds LIT UP with warm wishes and congratulations for the girls. Winning this medal puts Heymans in the history books! How cool is that?! She is now officially the first female diver to reach the podium in four consecutive Olympics. The best part, she's only 30! such great accomplishments to receive in your life. This medal for Able on the other hand becomes her first in her second Olympic games and she's only 20. Do I have to say how amazing that is? I'm 20 and I haven't accomplished as much as she has. This was definitely a happy day here north of the border. I think these two young ladies have raised the hopes up in the country. Two days in and we are in good spirits.

In other Olympic news:
- Canada's Women's Eight came first in their heat on Day 2 and will advance to the finals against the US on Day 6!
- Canada's artistic gymnastic team made the team finals today marking history for the team.
- Brittany MacLean, 18-year-old from Toronto (18 oh my goodness) makes 400m freestyle finals coming in with the sixth best score. Good Luck!

Right now, China is in the lead with the most medals followed by the US and Italy. Check Twitter #CTVOlympics for all your Canadian Olympic fun!

Mason Jars, DIY Bracelet, Invitations

Every week I will be posting and talking about a few posts from other blogs or websites that I think are fun, handy, and worth sharing with you guys. One of this week's post actually comes from my roommate who sent this to me this morning (Hi Natalie). This post on Chapters/Indigo website shows 6 different ways to use mason jars. We are all accustomed to seeing mason jars used for storage but here they suggest alternative ways and one that I am especially loving is the idea to fill your drinks in the jars which could be really fun for girls night or a BBQ!

The original one I was going to share with you guys was a DIY from Love Maegan. Since I love it, I'm going to share it anyway. It's a DIY tutorial on making your own rose gold bracelet. I can't wait to try this. Luckily I have all the tools and material at home so it should be fast an easy. If you are looking for a place to buy the materials I would check out stores like Wal Mart and Michaels, or if you have a local beading store they would have the supplies as well. Either way, this is a really easy way to make your own jewellery.

Lastly for this week I wanted to share "15 Delightfully Geeky Wedding Invitations" from Mental Floss. If you appreciate the geek side of life then I guarantee you will love these. I think they are so fun, witty, and not to mention a unique way to tell everyone about your wedding date. If you are the right couple I say why not! My personal favorites from the website are the View Master, Mario's End Level Scene, Pacman and of course, being such a jukie, the Harry Potter Marauders Map!

There you go! My three posts of the week. Hope you guys enjoy them and let me know what you think!
